We face the biggest assault on our living standards for generations.
But the ‘Cost of living crisis’ and Liz Truss’ assault on working class people has led to the most powerful response from the trade unions for many years.
The strikes by RMT, ASLEF, TSSA, CWU and on the docks in Felixstowe and Liverpool have galvanised a mood of resistance.
Now UCU members in Further Education have joined the picket lines while 70k UCU members in HE are balloting for action.
While getting across the anti-trade union ballot ‘thresholds’ is crucial there is obviously a real debate about the kind of action needed to not just protest – but actually win.
The co-ordinated action by CWU and RMT shows that we can strike together, the CWU’s announcement of 19 days of strikes shows that escalation is possible and necessary.
The organised left across the movement and in UCU has a crucial role to play to make sure that votes for action lead to a serious fight – and win real victories for our members.
This is what the UCU’s national meeting at SOAS London (and online) will discuss. Please join us. Let’s get the vote out – and build for hard hitting action.
The meeting will also debate motions, and elect UCU Left NEC & Vice Presidential candidates, officers and steering committee.

Sunday 16th October, 10.30am-4pm
SOAS, Thornhaugh St, London WC1H 0XG
