Fight the victimisations! Fight the cuts!

UCU members at London Met are taking strike action on Thursday 29th Sept to demand the reinstatement of victimised union reps, David Hardman and Mark Campbell  and to stop mass compulsory redundancies and attacks on our terms and conditions. This is a critical dispute for the whole HE sector that requires support from all of you. Please stand with us.

VICTIMISATION. The reinstatement of UCU officers Mark Campbell and David Hardman.

Aside from the unjust circumstances of their redundancies, Mark and David should have been ‘bumped’ into positions left vacant when their faculty colleagues resigned. This is even more the case given their faculty announced there are to be no compulsory redundancies in the current round of cuts and has instead chose to create new posts.

REDUNDANCIES. Management have not engaged in meaningful consultation. No faculty proposals were presented for discussion prior to the (late) publication of outcome documents. UCU disputes the need for these widescale cuts and opposes all compulsory redundancies.

ATTACK ON TERMS & CONDITIONS. The restructuring is being used as an excuse to undermine our academic contract. The threat to assimilate staff on to so- called ‘full teaching loads’ or to reduce their fractions runs counter to management’s contractual requirement to individually consult over workloads. The new requirement to subscribe to supposed ‘university values’ paves the way for disciplinary action against staff who criticise university management decision making, undermining our academic freedom.
The continual attacks on staff do not just harm us, but harm the educayion of our students. Our working conditions are their learning conditions.

CONTINUING USE & ABUSE OF ZERO-HOURS CONTRACTS. At a time when Sports Direct has been publicly shamed into abandoning zero-hours contracts and other organisations are following suit, London Met continues to employ substantive staff on these terrible contracts. Zero-hour lecturers are also denied access to the traning and facilities avaliable to permanent staff, and yet are going to be subjected to the same performance evaluations.

NO GENUINE CONSULTATION WITH STAFF & STAFF UNIONS. Management are continuing their policy of unilaterally changing our terms and conditions – such as AWAM abandonment and the enforcing of ‘lecture capture’.
